During this unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic, band directors are concerned about the possible spread of germs that could occur during the traditional mouthpiece testing process used to help guide beginner band students as they select a band instrument.
I am posting information about a method I have developed and used over my 41-year teaching career. This method does not involve the use of mouthpieces during the assessment process, thereby eliminating all chances of spreading germs. Additionally, this method is based on years of research and guides students toward the selection of a band instrument that is most compatible with their physical assets.
By eliminating potential physical roadblocks, students experience an accelerated rate of progress. They are enabled to reach higher levels of performance during their early years of involvement in the band program. This method also assists the band director in establishing a balanced instrumentation for the beginning band while increasing the chances for a balanced instrumentation in the high school band program several years down the road.
